第13章 比較

more、less、better、sooner、longer、furtherなどの比較級は他の語句と結びつき、いわば慣用句となって様々な意味を表します。

1. moreに関するもの
   1. ～more「もう～」
      one word more（もう一言）、 a few〔little〕more（もう少し）、 many〔much〕more（もっとたくさん）、 once more（もう一度）、 no more～（もう～ない）
      I have no more to say. （私はもう言うことはない）
   2. more（＝rather）＋原級「（･･･よりは）むしろ～」
      He is more lucky than clever.
      （彼は利口だというよりはむしろ運がよい）
      〔比較〕He is luckier than his brother.
      （彼は兄弟よりももっと運がよい）
   3. more than～「～以上」
      It will take more than five years to build a new plant.
      （新工場を建設するには5年以上かかるだろう）
   4. no more than～「たった～しかない」
      He has no more than（＝only）a thousand yen.
      （彼は1,000円しか持っていない）
      〔比較〕He doesn’t have more than（＝He has at most）a thousand yen.
      （彼は1,000円以上はもっていない ―― 1,000円以下）
   5. no more～than･･･「･･･でないと同様に～ではない」
      He is no more capable of reading Chinese than I am.
      （私〔ができない〕と同様に、彼も中国語は読めない）
      〔比較〕He is not more capable of reading Chinese than I am.
      （彼は私ほど中国語は読めない）
   6. more or less「いくぶん」「多少」
      There were some more or less seriously injured people.
      （多少怪我人がでた）
      It’s an hour’s journey, more or less.
      （1時間くらいの旅程だ）
2. lessに関するもの
   1. less～「（･･･より）少ない〔く〕、小さい〔く〕」
      Eat less meat and more fruit. （肉の量を減らし、果物の量を増やしなさい）
      He is less active than before. （彼は以前ほど活動的ではない）
   2. less than～「～以下」、「少しも～ない」（＝not at all）
      You cannot live decently on less than two hundred thousand yen a month. （1ヵ月20万円以下ではまともな暮らしはできない）
      She is less than pleased with the proposal.
      （彼女はその申し出にちっとも喜んでいない）
   3. no less than～「～と同じほど」「～も」
      There were no less than (＝as many as) a hundred guests at the party.
      （その会には100人もの来客があった）
      〔比較〕There were not less than (＝at least) a hundred guests at the party. （その会には少なくとも100人の来客があった ―― 100人以上）
   4. (no less～than･･･「･･･と同様に～」
      He is no less guilty than (＝as guilty as) you are.
      （彼は君と同様罪がある）
      〔比較〕He is not less (＝perhaps more) guilty than you are.
      （彼の罪は君にまさるとも劣らない －以上かもしれぬ）
   5. (e)nonetheless「それでもなお、やはり」
      He is a clever man; nonetheless (＝nevertheless) he often makes mistakes. （彼は聡明な男だが、それでもよく失敗をする）
3. betterに関するもの
   You had better go at once. （君はすぐ行ったほうがよい）
   I know better than to quarrel.
   （けんかがよくないことは知っている。けんかする程ばかではない）
   know better. （もっと分別があってもいいはずだ）
4. soonerに関するもの
   I had no sooner left the office than it began to rain.
   （事務所を出たとたん雨が降りだした）
   Sooner or later he will gain a seat on the board of directors.
   （遅かれ早かれ彼は重役になるだろう）
5. longerに関するもの
   She is no longer living here. （彼女はもうここには住んでいない）
   I cannot wait any longer. （これ以上待てない）
6. farther〔further〕に関するもの
   Let us have no further delay.
   （もうこれ以上話をして時間をひき延ばすのはやめよう）
