第13章 比較

原級を用いて比較を表す言い方はasまたはsoを用います。

1. as～as･･･「･･･と同じくらい～」（同等比較）
   The London tube system works as efficiently as the Tokyo underground.
   （ロンドンの地下鉄系統は東京の地下鉄と同じように効率よく動いている）
   Toyota Motors produced twice as many cars as Volkswagen.
   （トヨタ自動車はフォルクスワーゲンの倍の車を生産した）
2. not as〔so〕～as･･･「･･･ほど～ではない」（同等比較の否定）
   Gold is not as〔so〕useful as iron.（金は鉄ほど有用ではない ＝ Iron is more useful than gold.）
   The express train does not travel as〔so〕fast as the Shinkansen.（急行列車は新幹線ほど速くは走らない ＝ The Shinkansen travels faster than the express train.）
   【注意】as～as･･･、not as〔so〕～as･･･の構文で、後の方のas･･･以下は文脈上明らかなときはしばしば省略されます。
   You are diligent, but he is several times as diligent (as you are).
   （君は勤勉だが、彼のほうが（君より）数倍勤勉だ）
   Nothing in life could be so dreadful (as this).
   （世の中にこれほど恐ろしいものはなかろう）
3. その他注意すべき原級による比較表現
   as～as･･･の形を含んでいても、同等比較とは異なった意味を表す慣用表現がいくつかあります。
   1. as～as possible、as～as･･･can「できるだけ～」
      I’ll get in touch with the chief as soon as possible (＝as soon as I can). （できるだけ早く上司と連絡をとろう）
   2. as～as（･･･）can be「この上もなく～」
      The weather was as nice as (it) could be. （天候はこの上もなくよかった）
   3. as～as any･･･「どんな･･･にも劣らず～」
      He works as hard as anybody.
      （彼はだれにも負けず熱心に働く ＝ He works the hardest.）
   4. as～as ever（･･･）「あいかわらず～」（ただし、everのあとに動詞を伴う場合はas～as any･･･と同じく「どんな･･･にも劣らず」の意味になる）
      The engine went asbeautifully as ever.
      （エンジンはあいかわらず快調だった）
      He is as great a statesman as ever lived.
      （古来彼ほどの政治家はいない）
