第13章 比較
最上級はふつう3つ以上のものを比較して「一番～」を表すときに用いられます。最上級を表す形容詞の前にはtheが置かれますが、副詞の場合にはtheはしばしば省略されます。また最上級のあとには「～のうちで」を表すin～（場所・範囲）やof～（同類の複数語句）の形がよく用いられます。
最上級を強調する語句にはmuch、by farなどがあります。
- 定冠詞（the）の有無
- 必ずtheをつける場合
形容詞が限定的に用いられ、次にくる名詞を修飾している場合にはその前にtheをつけます。
The Shinano is the longest river in Japan.
（信濃川は日本で一番長い川である）
This is the most expensive component in the equipment.
（これはその装置の中では最も高価な部品である）
This dictionary is by far the most useful of all.
（この辞書はどれよりもずっと役に立つ） - theが省略される場合
- 形容詞が叙述的に用いられるとき
とくに主語のある一部分を他の部分と比較したり、ある時の状態を別の時の状態と比較したりするときはtheを省きます。

$$ - mostが最上級の意味を失ってveryの意味で用いられるとき
この場合mostは絶対最上級と呼ばれます。絶対最上級ではふつう－estをつける語でもa most～、most～の形で用いられ、そのあとの名詞が複数形をとることもあります。また、このmostにはmy、thisなどの語がつくこともあります。
He is a most sincere man. （彼はきわめて誠実な男だ）
〔比較〕He is the sincerest man I have ever met.
（彼は今まで会った中で最も誠実な男だ）
He is one of my most respected seniors.
（あの人は私がとくに尊敬している先輩のひとりだ） - 副詞が最上級のとき
Of all the fruits, I like oranges (the) best.
（あらゆるくだものの中でオレンジが一番好きだ）
【注意】最近とくに口語では副詞の最上級でもtheをつける傾向が強くなっています。
- 形容詞が叙述的に用いられるとき
- 必ずtheをつける場合
- evenの意味を含む最上級
最上級がeven（～さえも）の意味で譲歩を表すことがあります。
The wisest（＝Even the wisest people）make mistakes.
（最も賢い人でもまちがいはある － 賢者も千慮の一失）
The strongest man cannot stop the laws of nature.
（どんな強い人でも自然の法則を止めることはできない） - 最上級を含む重要構文・慣用語句
most、least、best、lastなどの最上級は他の語句と結びつき、慣用句となって様々な意味を表します。- mostに関するもの
I can pay only ten dollars at (the) most.
（私はせいぜい10ドルしか払えない）
The stores were for the most part (＝mostly) closed.
（店は大部分が閉まっていた） - leastに関するもの
You must sleep at least seven hours a day.
（少なくとも1日7時間は睡眠をとらねばならない）
I am not the least afraid to die of cancer.
（私は癌で死ぬのが少なからずこわい）〔肯定〕
〔比較〕I am not in the least (＝not at all) afraid to die of cancer.
（私は癌で死ぬのが少しもこわくはない）〔否定〕
Smoking is a bad habit, to say the least.
（喫煙は控え目に言っても良くない習慣だ） - bestに関するもの
This is a second-rate company at best.
（これはいくらよくみても〔たかだか〕二流会社だ）
He was at his best on that day. （彼は当日は最高の出来だった）
You had best not give him any help.
（彼には助けを与えてやらないのが一番よい）
You should make the best of your time.
（君は自分の時間を最大限に利用すべきだ）
We must also work out the next (＝second) best policy.
（我々は次善の策を講じる必要がある） - lastに関するもの
At last (＝After a long wait), dinner was served. （やっと食事が出ました）
Last but not least, you must stay (＝remain) out of debt.
（大事なことを一つ言い残したが、借金は決してするな）
I saw〔heard〕the last of her on that day (＝I saw〔heard〕her for the last time on that day). （その日が彼女との見〔聞き〕納めであった）
I would be the last person to ask for such a favor.
（私などそんな事を望める義理はない － 願ってはならない） - 原級または比較級を用いて最上級と同じ内容を表す構文
「時ほど大切なものはない」
原 級： Nothing is so〔as〕important as time. 比較級： Nothing is more important than time.
Time is more important than anything else.最上級： Time is the most important thing of all.
「彼は古今第一の名指揮者である」
原 級： He is as great a conductor as ever lived. 比較級： He is greater than any other conductor that〔who〕ever lived. 最上級： He is the greatest conductor that〔who〕ever lived.
【注意】比較級のany other（他のどんな）の次にくる名詞はふつう単数形を用います。
