第31章 前置詞
前置詞は、形の上からみると①単独のもの（単純前置詞）、②2つまたはそれ以上の前置詞が合成したもの（複合前置詞）、③前置詞と他の語とが結合してしかも1つの前置詞の働きをするもの（群前置詞）に分けられます。
- 単純前置詞 ―― 語源的に最も単純なもの
after、at、by、for、from、in、of、on、over、per、since、through、till、to、under、up、withなど - 複合前置詞
into、onto、until、upon、within、without、about、above、across、along、aroundなど - 群前置詞
- 「前置詞 ＋ 名詞 ＋ 前置詞」の形で
by means of（によって）、by way of（を経由して）、for the sake of（のために）、in addition to（に加えて）、in front of（の前に）、in regard to（に関して）、in spite of（にもかかわらず）、on account of（のために）、with respect to（に関して）など
Thoughts are expressed by means of words.
（意見〔考え〕はことばで表現される）
This plane is bound for San Francisco by way of Honolulu.
（この飛行機はホノルル経由サンフランシスコ行きです） - 「形容詞〔副詞〕＋ 前置詞」の形で
ahead of（に先立って）、because of〔owing to〕（のために）、contrary to（に反して）、instead of（の代わりに）、out of（から）など
Because of〔Owing to〕careless driving he had an accident.
（不注意運転のため、彼は事故にあった）
You had better avoid waste instead of incurring debts.
（借金を背負い込むよりは無駄を省いた方がよいですよ） - その他の結合
as far as（まで）、as for〔to〕（に関しては）、from behind（うしろから）、on board（乗り込んで）、thanks to（のおかげで）など
He walked as far as the post office.
（彼は郵便局まで歩いて行った）
Thanks to your help we were successful.
（きみが助けてくれたおかげで、我々はうまくいった）
