suchは「このような」（＝of that quality）の意味で、asまたはthatとともに用いられることが多く、代名詞・形容詞の働きをします。

There was such a crowd (＝It was so crowded) that I couldn’t move.
（大変な人込みだったので身動きもできなかった） - 「そんな人・物」の意味で、前出の名詞の反復を避ける場合

He was a foreigner and was treated as such (＝a foreigner).
（彼は外国人だったのでそのように（外国人として）扱われた）
