sameにはふつうその前にtheをつけて、「同じ（事、物）」の意味を表します。
- 単独または次に名詞を伴って
The same may be said in Japan. （同じことが日本でも言える）
He called for the same again. （彼はもう一度同じ物を注文した）
Her name and mine are the same. （彼女の名前と私の名前は同じだ）
They were both born on the same day. （彼らはふたりとも同じ日に生まれた）
【注意】商用文や法律文書などでは、sameの前のtheが省略されることがあります。
We have heard from Mr. A and have written to (the) same.
（A氏より来信あり、同氏に返信す） - “the same～as〔that〕･･･” の形で、後続する語句や節と関連して、 「･･･と同じ～」の意味を表す場合
He has the same title as you.
（彼はきみが持っているのと同じ肩書を持っている）
He is the same man that we met the other day.
（彼は我々が先日会った人と同一人物だ） - 副詞または慣用句として
He is often rude, but I like him all the same (＝nevertheless).
（彼はよく無礼なことをするが、それでも好きだ）
It is all the same to me whether we meet on Tuesday or on Friday.
（火曜日に会おうが金曜日に会おうが、私はどちらでもよい）
The patient is much the same (＝nearly the same).
（患者というものは似たりよったりだ（ほとんど同じだ））
