第17章 助動詞の用法

oughtはtoとともに用い、義務・当然・見込みなどを表します。なおoughtは元来owe（～の義務がある）の過去の意味をもっているので過去形はありません。

1. 「ought to ＋ 原形動詞」
   1. 義務・当然：「～すべきだ」「～するのが当然だ」
      この場合oughtはmustよりはやわらかく、義務であることを確認したり勧告する感じで、通例あまり強く発音されません。
      You ought to pay the money at once, if you really owe it.
      （その金を本当に借りているなら、直ちにそれを返すべきだ）
      You oughtn’t (to) waste money on smoking.
      （タバコを吸って金をむだ使いすべきではない）
      He ought to know Canada well; he once lived there for ten years.
      （ 彼がカナダをよく知っているのは当たり前だ。むかし10年もそこに住んでいたのだから）
   2. 確かな推測：「～するはずだ」「きっと～する」
      I ordered it last month, so it ought to be ready by now.
      （先月注文したのだから、もうできているはずだ）
      He ought to prove himself (to be) a capable businessman.
      （彼はきっと自ら敏腕な実業家になってみせるだろう）
2. 「ought to have ＋ 過去分詞」
   1. 過去の義務の不履行に対する非難：「～すべきであったのに」
      You ought to have seen the doctor earlier.
      （きみはもっと早く医者にみてもらうべきだったのに）
      He ought to have kept silent about the matter.
      （彼はその件については黙っておればよかったのに）
   2. 過去の事柄に対する推測：「～したはずだ」
      He started early, so he ought to have arrived there by this time.
      （彼は早く出かけたので、もうそこに着いているはずです）
3. 間接話法・時制の一致とought to ought toはmustと同じように間接話法の主節の動詞が過去形になっていても、そのままの形で従節の中で用いられます。
   I told him that he ought to have full information at hand before starting a new business.（＝I said to him, “You ought to have full information at hand before starting a new business.”）
   （ 私は彼に新しい商売を始める前には十分な情報を入手しておいたほうがよいと伝えた）
