someとanyは意味的にもよく似ており、ふつう「いくらか、いくつか」の意味のほか、「だれか、なにか」などの意味も表します。
また一般にsomeは肯定文に、anyは否定文・疑問文に用いられると言われていますが、実際には、この原則があてはまらない場合が数多くあります。
- 肯定文におけるsomeとany
肯定文では一般にsomeが多く用いられますが、譲歩の意味を含むときにはanyも用いられます。
some ： 「いくらか」、「何〔だれ、いつ、どこ〕か」
We showed him some of our samples. （私たちは見本のいくつかを彼に示した）
See you again some day. （いつかまたお会いしましょう）
He lives somewhere in the suburbs. （彼は郊外のどこかに住んでいる）
any ： 「いくらでも」、「何〔だれ、いつ、どこ〕でも」
Any amount of money you would spare would be appreciated.
（あなたが残せた金はいくらであろうと貴いものだ）
You may come (at) any time you like.
（いつでも好きな時に来てよろしい） - 否定文におけるsomeとany
一般に否定文ではanyがよく用いられますが、someを用いる場合もあります。
some ： 「あるものは～でない、～でないものもある」（部分否定）
Some people do not accept compulsory relocation orders.
（強制的な転勤命令を受け入れない人もいる）
any ： 「何〔だれ、いつ、どこ〕も～ない」（完全否定）
I don’t knowanyof these people. （私はこの人たちのだれも知らない）
We cannot get such a good medicine anywhere.
（こんな良薬はどこからも得られない）
【注意】「全部が全部～というわけではない」と部分的に否定する言い方を部分否定といい、「すべて～ではない」と全面的に否定する言い方を完全否定といいます。 - 疑問文におけるsomeとany
疑問文では一般にanyが用いられます。ただし、特殊な場合にはsomeが用いられることがあります。
some ： 肯定の答を予期したり、人にものをすすめたり依頼したりするとき
Aren’t there some stamps in that drawer?
（＝There are some stamps in that drawer, aren’t there?またはThere are some stamps in that drawer, I am sure.）
（その引出しに切手が入っているでしょう）
Will you have some cake?（＝Please have some cake.）
（ケーキはいかがですか）
any ： 「いくつか、いくらか、何か、どんな」などの意味で、明白にyesまたはnoの答えを求める場合に用いられます。
Are there any vice presidents in your company?
（あなたの会社には、副社長が何人かいますか）
Is there any water in the tank?
（水槽には水が入っていますか）
Do you have any time available?（＝is there any time convenient for you?）
（ご都合のよい時間がありますか） - その他some、anyの注意すべき用法
- a certain（ある）、unknown（未知の）を表すsome ―― 単数名詞を修飾します。
He went to some place in France last year.
（去年彼はフランスの（どこか知らぬが）ある場所に行った）
【注意】ただし、someに対してa certainは、自分で分かっていながらわざと言わないとき、または言う必要のない場合に用います。

（この重大事件は50年ほど前に起きた）
A little boy of some ten years of age stood up and gave his seat to the old lady.
（10歳ばかりの少年が立ち上がって、その老婦人に席を譲った） - 条件節とany
anyはifなどで始まる条件節の中で用いられ、「何か、誰か、少しでも」などの意味を表します。
If you want any of these magazines, I will lend you some.
（この雑誌のどれか必要でしたらお貸ししましょう)
If anyone comes, tell him that I am out.
（もし誰かが来たら、私は留守だと言ってください）
If you have any difficulty, ask me for help.
（もし何か困ることがあれば、私に助けを求めてください）
【注】条件節にsomeも使うことができますが、その時はanyより確実性が高いことを示します。
If I find some, I will send it〔them〕to you.
（あったら送りましょう）
If I find any, I will send it〔them〕to you.
（もしあったら送りましょう） - some、anyの複合語 ―― somebody (someone)、anybody (anyone)、
something、anythingなどがあり、これらはsome、anyの用法に準じます。
Please send me somebody〔someone〕. （だれかを寄こしてください）
Anybody〔Anyone〕can use the camera. （そのカメラはだれでも使える）
Something is wrong with the machine. （その機械はどこか故障している）
Is there anything I can do for you?
（なにかあなたにしてあげることがありますか）
